Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts: Intellectual Property, Collaborations, and Third-Party Contracting Seminar

Whether you realize it or not, every organization deals with intellectual property (IP) in the form of copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and sometimes even patents whether it owns such IP or deals with the IP of others. A basic understanding of the rights granted by the ownership of such intellectual property is essential to realize the scope and limits of what your organization can and cannot do with IP and if, in fact, your organization even owns the IP. It is particularly important when organizations collaborate with each other to define and identify what IP each party brings to the table, what can be done with the IP created out of the collaboration, and who owns the IP after the collaboration. When dealing with contractors whom your organization has hired to perform a particular task (such as photographers, web site developers, writers, copy editors, etc.) it is important to realize that your organization may not actually own the IP to what's been created by the contractor even if the work was created for the benefit of your organization! This seminar will go over the basics of IP, what it means to own IP, how it can be shared and protected, and how to properly establish ownership in IP.
