Whether you realize it or not, every organization deals with intellectual property (IP) in the form of copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and sometimes even patents whether it owns such IP or deals with the IP of others. A basic understanding of the rights granted by the ownership of such intellectual property is essential to realize the scope and limits of what your organization can and cannot do with IP and if, in fact, your organization even owns the IP.
