Where will my case be heard?
Pennsylvania permits smaller claims (under $12,000) to be heard by the Magisterial District Courts. Matters beyond that threshold, or on appeal from the Magisterial District Court, proceed before the Court of Common Pleas of a given county. Some matters give rise to federal court jurisdiction (e.g., an amount in controversy over $75,000 along with diversity of citizenship, or when a federal question or law is at issue), in which case, they are heard by a federal judge in the appropriate United States District Court.
